Scholarships for Australia
Most scholarships for Indian students are offered by Australian universities as a percentage off tuition, based on academic merit. Some government-funded awards exist, but they are limited and competitive.
Scholarship availability depends on the university, programme, your academic profile and the intake.
English Requirements for Australian Universities
Most universities ask for IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall (with minimum band scores), or an equivalent PTE Academic or TOEFL score. Courses such as nursing and teaching often need higher scores. The Student visa also has its own English requirements.
Student Visa (Subclass 500) and Post-Study Work
After you accept your offer and pay the deposit, the university issues a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE). You then apply for the Student visa (subclass 500) online with your CoE, OSHC health cover, financial evidence and a Genuine Student statement. Student visa holders can usually work up to 48 hours per fortnight during study periods.
After graduating, you may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485). How long you can stay depends on your qualification and the current rules.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I study in Australia without IELTS?
Many Australian universities accept PTE Academic or TOEFL instead of IELTS. A few may consider other evidence of English, but most students need an approved test score. It depends on the university, course and visa rules.
How much does it cost to study in Australia?
Tuition is roughly AUD 25,000–45,000 a year for a bachelor’s degree and AUD 30,000–50,000 a year for a master’s. For the visa you also need evidence of living costs (about AUD 29,710 a year at the time of writing) and must pay the AUD 2,500 visa application charge.
Which intake should I choose — February or July?
February is the main intake with the most courses; July is the second major intake. The right choice depends on your course and when your results and documents will be ready.
Can I work while studying in Australia?
Student visa holders can usually work up to 48 hours per fortnight during study periods, and more during official breaks. Always check the current conditions on your visa.
Can I apply with a study gap?
Yes, if the gap is explained clearly — for example with work experience or exam preparation. The university and the Genuine Student assessment will look at your overall reasons for studying.
How early should I apply for Australia?
Ideally 8–12 months before your intake, to leave time for English tests, applications, your CoE and the visa.
