IELTS in India is administered by two organisations — IDP IELTS India and the British Council. You register with whichever one operates your preferred test centre; both tests are identical in format and equally accepted everywhere. See our full IELTS exam overview for format, validity, and fees.

Step-by-step
- Decide Academic or General Training — Academic for university admission, General Training for most work/migration visas. (See our full Academic vs General comparison if you’re not sure.)
- Choose paper-based or computer-delivered — computer-delivered gives you results in 3–5 days; paper-based takes 13 days.
- Find your nearest test centre and date — use the official IDP (ieltsidpindia.com) or British Council (britishcouncil.in) centre finder. Indore has a test centre; Jabalpur candidates should check the current nearest available venue, as centres are periodically added or changed.
- Create an account and pay the fee — currently ₹19,000 for standard IELTS (see our Fees page for the full breakdown), payable online by card or net banking.
- Upload your documents — a valid passport is the only accepted ID (no other document is valid), plus a recent digital passport-style photo for online registration. The name on your IELTS registration must exactly match your passport.
- Book your Speaking slot — this may be on a different day from your Listening/Reading/Writing session, depending on the centre.
- Prepare — this is where a structured coaching plan and mock tests make the biggest difference to your actual band score.
Common registration mistakes
- Name mismatch between IELTS registration and passport — causes delays or denied entry on test day.
- Booking a test date before finishing preparation — leaves no time to retake a weak module.
- Not checking university/visa deadlines before choosing a test date — results can take up to 13 days for paper-based tests.

Frequently Asked Questions About IELTS Registration
How far in advance should I register for IELTS?
Test centres and dates get booked up, especially in peak admission seasons, so it’s best to register as soon as you’ve decided on Academic or General Training and roughly which weeks work for your preparation timeline. Registering early also gives you more choice of centre and date.
Can I change my test date after booking?
Date and centre changes may be possible depending on IDP’s or the British Council’s current policies and availability, sometimes for a fee. Contact them directly through your registration account as soon as you know you need to change — don’t wait until close to the date.
What if the name on my registration doesn’t match my passport?
This is one of the most common registration mistakes and can cause delays or denied entry on test day. Always register using your name exactly as printed on your passport, including middle names and spacing.
Is online IELTS registration safe and official?
Yes — always register directly through the official IDP IELTS India (ieltsidpindia.com) or British Council (britishcouncil.in) websites. RK Global does not process your registration or payment; we guide you through the process and help you prepare.
