Chevening Scholarship for Indian Students — Eligibility & Application Guide

Chevening Scholarship for Indian Students — Eligibility & Timeline
Chevening Scholarship for Indian students: eligibility, the 2,800-hour work-experience rule, English requirements, interviews and how the annual application cycle works, based on chevening.org.

Chevening is a fully-funded UK government scholarship for a one-year master’s degree, aimed at emerging leaders. Applications run once a year: the application window usually opens in early August and closes in early October, for study starting the following September/October. Exact dates change every cycle, so always confirm the current deadline on the official Chevening timeline page before you plan.

What Is Chevening?

Chevening is the UK government’s international scholarships programme, funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office and partner organisations. It funds a one-year taught master’s degree at a UK university for candidates it identifies as future leaders and influencers, and it is open to citizens of Chevening-eligible countries and territories — India is one of them.

Who Chevening Is For

Chevening looks for candidates with leadership potential and a clear plan for how a UK master’s degree and the Chevening network will help them contribute to their field or country after they return. It is not primarily an academic-merit scholarship in the way some university scholarships are — your work experience, leadership evidence and career plan matter as much as your academic record.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Citizenship: citizen of a Chevening-eligible country (India qualifies); you cannot hold British or dual British citizenship, with narrow exceptions
  • Residency: not currently residing in the UK at the time of application
  • Undergraduate degree: completed at least two years before the application deadline, to a level that qualifies you for a UK master’s programme
  • Return commitment: you must commit to returning to your home country for at least two years after your award ends
  • Not eligible: employees of certain governments and their immediate relatives, individuals contracted to British Council programmes, and previous recipients of most UK-government-funded scholarships (a five-year waiting period applies to previous Chevening Fellows)

Work Experience Requirement

Chevening requires at least 2,800 hours of work experience (roughly two years at a standard working week), acquired after completing your undergraduate degree. This can be built from up to fifteen combined periods of full-time employment, part-time employment, voluntary work, or paid/unpaid internships — it does not have to be one continuous job. Hours are calculated automatically from the weeks and hours per role you enter in the application, so keep accurate records of your employment dates.

English Language Requirement

Chevening itself removed its own standalone English language requirement in 2020 — it does not set a specific IELTS or TOEFL score. Instead, you must meet whatever English requirement your chosen UK university sets as part of its own admissions process, and secure an unconditional offer from one of your course choices. If you’re unsure whether a university will want a UKVI-approved test or a standard Academic score, see our SELT vs Academic IELTS guide.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Leaving your two references until the last week — referees need real time to write a strong, specific letter
  • Writing generic leadership essays instead of concrete examples from your own experience
  • Underestimating how long it takes to secure an unconditional university offer, and missing the offer deadline as a result
  • Not aligning your course choices and career plan into one coherent story across the whole application

What Happens After Selection

If selected, Chevening funds your tuition and living costs in the UK for the duration of your one-year master’s, along with a range of related costs, as set out in the official award terms at the time of your offer. You’ll also join the wider Chevening alumni network, and you’re expected to return to your home country for at least two years after your award ends, in line with the eligibility commitment above.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a university offer before I apply for Chevening?
No — you apply to Chevening with your course choices, and you only need to secure an actual unconditional offer by the later offer deadline if you’re selected.

Does Chevening require a specific IELTS score?
No. Chevening removed its own English requirement in 2020; you need to meet whatever your chosen university requires.

Can I apply for Chevening and other scholarships at the same time?
Generally yes, though you should check current Chevening guidance on combining awards, since terms can change year to year.

What if I don’t meet the 2,800-hour work experience requirement yet?
You’re not eligible for that cycle — wait until you’ve genuinely accumulated the required hours rather than applying early and risking rejection.
