Part 1
Introduction & interview · 4–5 minFamiliar topics — home, work, study, hobbies. Where most students sound rehearsed.
Part 2
Cue card · 3–4 minOne minute to prepare, two minutes to speak. Where most students run out of things to say at 1:10.
Part 3
Discussion · 4–5 minAbstract questions linked to Part 2. Where Band 7 is won or lost — and the part almost nobody practises.

Why speaking scores stall at 6.0 – 6.5

The IELTS examiner marks four criteria, each worth the same. Most Indian candidates are strong on two and lose the band on the other two — usually without knowing which.

Fluency & Coherence

Memorised answers and long pauses

Examiners recognise a rehearsed Part 1 answer in seconds and probe past it. Fluency is the ability to keep going on an unexpected question, not to recite.

Lexical Resource

Safe words, repeated

"Good", "nice", "important" fifteen times. Band 7 needs some less common vocabulary and idiomatic language used naturally — and paraphrase when a word won't come.

Grammatical Range & Accuracy

Only simple sentences — or complex ones with errors

Conditionals, relative clauses and past tenses used correctly under time pressure. This is drilled, not learnt from a list.

Pronunciation

Word stress and sentence stress

Individual sounds are rarely the problem; flat intonation and misplaced stress are. Fixing this alone can lift a band.

Which two are costing you?

Part by part: what to practise, and what the examiner is listening for

PartWhat happensWhere students lose marksWhat to practise
Part 1 (4–5 min)Short questions about you: work, study, home, routines, likes.Rehearsed, over-long answers; one-word answers; the same three adjectives. Two to three natural sentences per answer with a reason or example; answering the follow-up you didn't expect.
Part 2 (3–4 min)A cue card, one minute to prepare, up to two minutes to speak.Running out at 1:10; describing instead of narrating; no ending.Using the minute to plan four moves (what, when/where, why it matters, how you felt); extending with a short story and a closing line.
Part 3 (4–5 min)Abstract discussion questions linked to the Part 2 topic.One-sentence answers; personal examples where a general view is asked; losing structure.Answer → reason → example → contrast ("although…"). This is where Band 7 is decided.

The four criteria, in plain terms

  • Fluency and coherence — can you keep going at a natural pace and connect ideas, or do you self-correct and pause while searching for words?
  • Lexical resource — do you have precise words for the topic, some less common ones, and the ability to paraphrase when a word won't come?
  • Grammatical range and accuracy — do you use a mix of structures (conditionals, relative clauses, past forms) and get most of them right under pressure?
  • Pronunciation — are individual sounds clear, and do you use word stress and intonation so the listener never has to work to follow you?

Each criterion is worth the same. A fluent speaker with weak grammar and a careful speaker with weak fluency can land on the same 6.5 for opposite reasons — which is why a diagnostic matters more than "more practice".

What a speaking session actually looks like

You practise

A timed Part 1, 2 or 3 with the trainer as examiner — no script, no pausing.

Trainer listens

Not for "good English" — for the four criteria: fluency, vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation.

Mistakes identified

The pattern, not just the slip: "you drop articles under pressure", "Part 3 answers stop after one sentence".

Specific feedback

Two or three fixes you can hear yourself apply in the next attempt, the same session.

Practice plan

What to record and send before the next class, so the fix becomes a habit.

How online speaking practice works

Free diagnostic call

20 minutes over video. A short Part 1 and Part 2, then feedback on all four criteria and an estimated band.

Full mock interviews

In the program, every session includes a timed three-part mock with the trainer as examiner, followed by line-by-line feedback and a recording you can review.

Targeted drills

Part 3 discussion frameworks, cue-card extension techniques, stress and intonation work — chosen for your weak criteria, not a generic syllabus.

Speaking practice is part of RK Global's online IELTS coaching (one-to-one, ₹10,000) alongside writing evaluation, listening and reading strategy, and full mock tests.

In a batch of twenty, you speak for two minutes an hour. In a one-to-one session you speak for most of it — and every answer gets a correction while it's still fresh. That's the difference between knowing the criteria and meeting them on the day.

Classes are live over video call, so students in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Chandigarh or a smaller town get the same trainer as our Jabalpur centre.

IELTS speaking practice — questions

Is the diagnostic call really free?

Yes. 20 minutes over video, a short Part 1 and Part 2, feedback on the call. No enrolment needed.

Will you tell me my speaking band?

You'll get the trainer's estimated band for that session against each criterion, clearly marked as an estimate. Only the official test gives an official score.

Can I practise speaking online as effectively as in person?

Yes — the real IELTS Speaking test is also conducted by video call at many centres now. Practising over video prepares you for exactly that.

How many mock interviews will I get?

In the online program, speaking practice is part of every session, with a full timed three-part mock at least weekly and before your exam date.

I'm confident speaking English at work. Why is my score 6.5?

Because the examiner is marking range and accuracy, not confidence. Fluent speakers often lose the band on Grammatical Range or on Part 3, where answers need to be developed and abstract. A diagnostic call shows you which.
