IELTS Mock Test Online: How to Take One Properly

A mock test is only useful if you sit it under real conditions and read the result honestly. Here is how each module works in a computer-format mock, where the official free practice tests are, and how RK Global marks full-length mocks.

Honest note: RK Global does not host its own online mock-test platform yet. We run full-length mocks marked by the trainer inside the online program, plus a free band assessment. Official free tests are linked below.

What an online IELTS mock test actually is

An IELTS mock test is a full-length practice test taken end to end, in one sitting, under exam timing. "Online" means one of two things. A computer-format mock puts Listening, Reading and Writing on screen with typed answers, the way computer-delivered IELTS is taken at the centre. A practice test delivered online is a PDF or web page you work through at home, often still on paper. Only the first prepares you for the interface, the typing and the timer.

IDP and British Council both state that content, timing, question types and scoring are identical on computer and on paper; the differences are mechanical, and covered on our page about computer-based IELTS preparation.

What a mock is not is a band predictor you can trust to the half band. It is a diagnostic: where time runs out, which question types cost you marks, whether your Writing holds up at minute 55.

How each module works in a mock test

Run your mock in the real order — Listening, Reading, Writing back to back with no break, then Speaking separately. Stamina is part of what you are testing.

Module 1

Listening — about 30 minutes, plus 2 minutes to check

Forty questions, four recordings, played once. You type answers into the boxes as the audio runs, then get two minutes to check. Practise with that limit, not a paper test's ten-minute transfer window.

Module 2

Reading — 60 minutes, 40 questions

Three sections, no transfer time. Note the clock at each section end: the classic failure is 28 minutes on Section 1 and a rushed Section 3, where the harder questions live.

Module 3

Writing — 60 minutes for both tasks

Task 1 in about 20 minutes, at least 150 words; Task 2 in about 40, at least 250. Task 2 carries more weight, so never let Task 1 eat into it. The live word count tempts you to write to the number instead of the question.

Module 4

Speaking — 11–14 minutes, three parts

Part 1 familiar topics, Part 2 the cue card (one minute to prepare, two to speak), Part 3 abstract discussion. Speaking is always with a real examiner, so a mock needs a real person on the other side — see how we run online speaking practice.

How to take a mock test properly

Most students take mocks in a way that flatters the score and hides the problem. Four rules fix it.

Recreate the conditions

One sitting, phone face down, door closed, headphones for Listening. No dictionary, no notes, no looking anything up.

Time every module strictly

A visible timer per module. When it ends, stop — even mid-sentence. An unfinished Task 2 is information; one with ten extra minutes is not.

Never pause the audio

Listening plays once, straight through. No rewinding, no replaying a section you missed. Losing an answer and recovering is itself a skill.

Review the same day

Go through every wrong answer while you remember why you chose it, and note the reason: misread, ran out of time, unknown word, spelling. The pattern is the lesson.

Two or three mocks a week at most, with real review in between. A mock without review is a slow way to feel bad.

How to read a mock band score honestly

This is where self-study goes wrong. The four modules are not equally easy to self-score, and pretending otherwise buys you a comfortable number and a bad surprise on test day.

ModuleCan you score it yourself? What to do
ListeningYes, reasonably. Raw score out of 40 converts to an estimated band.Count strictly: a misspelling is wrong, a plural for a singular is wrong. No benefit of the doubt.
ReadingYes — same raw score out of 40, though Academic and General Training convert differently.Use the conversion supplied with that test, and treat the result as a range, not a number.
WritingNo, not reliably.Four criteria — Task Achievement/Response, Coherence & Cohesion, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range & Accuracy. Self-scoring and automated scoring over-reward length and complicated words, which is how essays lose Band 7. See how writing evaluation works.
SpeakingNo.Fluency & Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range & Accuracy, Pronunciation — judged live. Recording yourself exposes pauses, not a band.

So a self-marked mock gives you two solid numbers and two guesses. Your overall is the average of four bands rounded to the nearest half, so a wrong guess on Writing or Speaking moves the whole estimate.

Mistakes students make in a computer-based mock

  • Training on paper, testing on computer. Paper builds the wrong habits — especially the Listening transfer time that does not exist on screen.
  • Typing too slowly. Writing 400+ words in 60 minutes needs comfortable typing; hunting for keys throttles your ideas.
  • Expecting spell-check. There is none. Spelling and typing errors count exactly as handwriting errors would.
  • Ignoring the on-screen tools. Highlighting and notes are available in Reading; students who never practise them scroll blindly.
  • Being surprised by the timer. It flashes at 10 minutes and again at 5. That should be a checkpoint, not a shock.
  • Skipping the final pass. On screen it is easy to flag a question and never return to it.

Where to get legitimate official practice tests

Before paying anyone for a mock, use the free official material — it comes from the organisations that run the test, so question types, interface and timing are authentic.

A preparation strategy built around mocks

Mocks are checkpoints, not the training itself. Over four to six weeks, a sensible cycle looks like this.

Baseline mock

One full test in week one, self-marked for Listening and Reading, Writing and Speaking sent to a trainer. Your honest starting point.

Targeted work

Two weeks on what the baseline exposed — question types, timing, one writing task, one speaking part. Not everything at once.

Mid-point mock

A second full test to check the fix worked. If Reading still slips in Section 3, the problem is strategy, not effort.

Final rehearsal

One last mock the week before your exam, at the same time of day as your slot, in the format you booked.

If your date is fixed, our 30-day IELTS study plan lays this out day by day; if you are stuck around 6.5, the 6.5 to 7 band guide covers the gaps that hold that score in place.

What RK Global actually offers on mock tests

Being straight matters more than sounding impressive. RK Global does not host a self-serve online mock-test platform. Here is what exists today.

Full-length mocks inside the online program

Students in the live online program sit full-length mocks marked by the trainer — Writing corrected against the four criteria personally, Speaking as a timed three-part mock interview over video with same-session feedback. Computer-based practice happens on RK Global's online portal, our own environment, not a copy of the official software.

Free IELTS band assessment

Open to anyone, not only enrolled students. Fill the form and the trainer replies on WhatsApp with an estimated band and what to fix first, including one writing sample reviewed free. Not a full mock — the starting point most students skip.

IELTS mock tests — questions students ask

Does RK Global have an online mock test I can take right now?

Not as a self-serve tool on the website. Full-length mocks are run and marked by the trainer for students inside the online program, and the free band assessment is open to everyone. For self-serve practice today, use the official free tests linked above.

Will a mock test give me an accurate band score?

Partly. Listening and Reading convert from a raw score out of 40 into a reliable estimate. Writing and Speaking need a trained marker, so treat an unmarked mock band as an estimate for two modules out of four.

How many mock tests should I take before my exam?

Three to five across a four to six week window, with real review after each. Daily mocks without review improve nothing except your tolerance for sitting exams.

Should I practise mocks on computer or on paper?

Whichever format you booked. If your test is computer-delivered, paper practice builds habits that cost you — particularly the two-minute Listening check, and typing under time pressure.

Is the free assessment the same as a mock test?

No. It is a short diagnostic: send your level and a writing sample, and the trainer replies with an estimated band and the first thing to fix. A mock is a full three-hour test.

How is this different from your free IELTS mock test page?

The free IELTS mock test is our local sitting for Jabalpur and Indore. This page covers online and computer-format mocks generally, and what RK Global marks inside its online IELTS program.
